MK:

Neue Zeit, neue Dramatik

The MK continuously test different models for involving authors in their production processes. How can the theatre become a place where contemporary literature is created and the texts become a means of not leaving reality alone? In doing so, MK focus on interdisciplinary, long-term collaborations and repeatedly pose the question of forms of collective work.

International Edith and Werner Rieder Prize for New Drama

On July 5, 2025, playwright Lennart Kos was awarded the International Edith and Werner Rieder Prize for New Playwriting (formerly the Munich Prize for New Playwriting). The jury awarded the prize to his play “IRIDIUM on earth”, which was presented as part of the Long Night of New Drama at the Münchner Kammerspiele in a workshop reading (director: Olivia Axel Scheucher).

With prize money of 20,000 euros, the Edith and Werner Rieder Prize is one of the most highly endowed awards for drama in the German-speaking world. The prize is awarded biennially by the Cultural Department of the City of Munich, Drei Masken Verlag, the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Edith-und-Werner-Rieder Foundation, whose increased commitment is also reflected in the name change of the prize.

The prize gives a voice, attention, trust and networking

The Edith and Werner Rieder Prize creates “a hearing, attention, trust and networking”, says juror Wiebke Puls. It is embedded in a two-month residency program at the Münchner Kammerspiele, which offers the four nominated authors - Marie-Christin Janssen, Lennart Kos, Vincent Sauer and Ivan Vlatković - space for artistic development and exchange with theater makers.

Lennart Kos’ text was honored by jury member Wiebke Puls in her laudatory speech at the end of the Lange Nach der neuen Dramatik:

“It is impressive how a fairly young author can look at our present, which is not exactly characterized by uplifting moments, with so much analytical distance. On us humans, despite all our accuracy, with so much humor and empathy. Looking ahead and looking back. Reconciliatory. The punchlines of your language, the artistry of your narrative, your gliding through genres, the many unobtrusive cultural, historical and political cross-references. The calculated planning and courageous execution of an artistic act.”

Our playwrights

The Kammerspiele see themselves as a place of literary production, a place for thinking about language. They question the present with the means of drama. They are in constant dialogue with these authors.
