Female Peace Palace

Theatre and Resistance in Times of War

Festival from 31.3. - 23.4.2023

Münchner Kammerspiele & Monacensia im Hildebrandhaus

Female Peace Palace

The “Female Peace Palace festival is dedicated to the courage, vision and struggles of women in war and resistance. Comprising theatre and discussions, it draws a line from a visionary historic event during the First World War, which was largely organised from Munich – the first “Women’s Peace Congress” held in 1915 in The Hague – to current conflict zones. Placing their faith in art and theatre, the invited artists will search for ways to describe the dilemmas and hell of war, while at the same time dedicating themselves to finding the strength from which the future can grow. Together with guests from countries including Ukraine, Iran, Syria and Belarus, the “Female Peace Palace opens up a space for understanding about freedom, resistance and contradictions in the transnational spirit of The Hague in 1915. The festival is an invitation to start conversations and to dream at a time when, faced by hatred and war, we may lack the words and imagination.

The literary scholar Fabienne Imlinger meets activists, artists, scientists and curators for a conversation.

Pacifism as utopia in war, war as metaphor and expression of patriarchal structures, ideology as self-deception? In her literary essay for the #FemalePeacePalace slam, Volha Hapeyeva analyses the causes and cruelties of war and also questions how pacifism could succeed. Because even democracy is “no guarantee for peace”.

An exhibition at Monacensia

Around 1900, young women from all over moved to Munich and dared to live a free life as artists. Their rebellion against social barriers and bourgeois morals is reflected in their life plans and texts. Starting with Franziska zu Reventlow, Margarete Beutler and Emmy Hennings, the lives and works of the Bohemian women are presented in the context of literature, culture, politics and society.
