“Desertshore” is Nico’s third solo album from 1970, and almost 53 years after its release, it is going on tour - in an interpretation of the Berlin soloist ensemble Kaleidoskop, together with singer and artist ANIKA (Invada, Sacred Bones, Stones Throw). This special work combines elements of gothic and folk rock and is in the form of a song cycle. The symbolism of the longing for death emerging in German Romanticism inspires the lyrics and music. “Desertshore” is somber and unsettling. Partly because Nico’s voice keeps its distance from John Cale’s resonant, sometimes bittersweet arrangements. ANIKA is one of the most fascinating voices in contemporary pop music. And her cold, stoic tone breathes Nico’s spirit. With composers and ensemble members Grégoire Simon and Paul Valikoski, the motifs of Desertshore become their own compositions. The music, lyrics and atmosphere of Nico’s album serve as a substrate for a deeper musical exploration of death, transience and isolation.
