Doris Uhlich

Doris Uhlich is a choreographer and performer living in Vienna. Her work focuses on everyday gestures or, as in “SPITZE” (2008), “Come Back” (2012), and “Come Back Again” (2025), artificial gestures—in these cases, the strict movement code of classical ballet. Her performances often explore ideals of beauty and body norms. Since her piece “more than naked” (2013), Doris Uhlich has also been exploring the representation of nudity beyond ideology and provocation in her work. Music, especially electronic dance music from new wave to techno, plays an important role in this. Another focus of her work is the exploration of the complex relationship between humans and machines, and the examination of the future of the human body in the age of surgical and genetic perfection. The projects are shown in various locations, on stages, in museums, and site-specific.

In 2017, she was awarded the Nestroy Prize for “Inclusion on Equal Terms” for the duet ‘Ravemachine’ together with Michael Turinsky. The production “Every Body Electric,” which premiered in 2018, was invited to the Venice Dance Biennale and the Bienal Sesc de Dança in São Paulo, among others. She has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Austrian Art Prize 2024 from the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service, and Sport in the category “Performing Arts” and the Austrian Music Theater Prize 2024 in the category “Best Dance Production” for her piece “SONNE.” She teaches internationally and has teaching assignments at universities, including the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and the Master Contemporary Arts Practise (CAP) at the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

During the Covid pandemic, Doris Uhlich choreographed the dance performance “Habitat” at the Munich Kammerspiele, followed by the ensemble dance piece “In Ordnung” in the 2023/24 season. “Glitsch” is her third work at the Munich Kammerspiele.
