Barbara Mundel

Barbara Mundel was born in 1959 in Hildesheim and studied Modern German Literature, History of Art and Performing Arts. Since the 1980s, she has worked as a Dramaturge at Theater Basel, Volksbühne Berlin, Münchner Kammerspiele and the Ruhrtriennale festival of arts. She has also worked as a Director focussing on musical theatre and collaborating with establishments such as Oper Frankfurt and the Salzburger Festspielen theatre festival. From 1999 to 2004, she was the Director of the Luzerner Theater and from 2006 to 2017, she was Director of Theater Freiburg where she tackled the key issue of a “municipal theatre of the future”. Under Barbara’s directorship, the magazine Die deutsche Bühne (German Stage) awarded Theater Freibung multiple accolades for its “exceptionally convincing theatre work beyond the major theatre scene”. She has been the Director of the Münchner Kammerspiele since September 2020.
