Martina Hefter reads or shows excerpts from current works. Martina Hefter works as an author and performer in Leipzig. She recently published the poetry collection „In die Wälder gehen, Holz für ein Bett klauen“ and, together with the musicians Timm Völker and Patrice Lipeb the music spoken poetry performance „Linn Meier(+2019)“, a realisation of the long poem of the same name from the current volume.

Film “A Room of your Own” by Swoosh Lieu

“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write,” wrote Virginia Woolf in her 1929 essay ‘A Room of One’s Own’. Over 90 years later this allegory of financial and spatial independence is more relevant than ever. While we experience an antifeminist backlash during the crisis caused by the Corona virus, women are repeatedly finding that doors are being closed to them and their spaces are becoming smaller or being taken away entirely.

In an audio-visual adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s text, Swoosh Lieu inquire into what the spaces must look like where we can emancipate ourselves and find self-fulfilment. What means do we need to use to talk about and imagine these spaces in order to actually allow them to come into being? Based on these questions, the camera moves through the empty theatre space during lockdown, exploring places and perspectives, visibilities and volumes, points of access and limitations. In between, it dives into real and virtual imaginary spaces, disappears into green screens and disco balls – until it finally takes off to a new horizon, beyond which there is room for everyone and we are not alone.

Swoosh Lieu are theatre operators, workshop specialists, agents of theatricalities, explorers of peripheral forms. The queer-feminist collective creates temporary spaces and images in real time, while simultaneously highlighting their conditions of creation.

Notes von Ivana Müller.

Notes ist eine Liebeserklärung an Bücher und lesende Menschen, inspiriert von der Praxis der „Marginalien“ aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Vor dem Verschenken eines Buches an eine befreundete oder geliebte Person, schrieben die Schenkenden Gedanken und kleine Botschaften, sogenannte Marginalien, an den Rand, die den Text aufgreifen, ergänzen und das Buch personalisieren. Die Choreografin Ivana Müller greift mit ihrem Projekt „Notes“ (seit 2016) diese Praxis auf und lädt im Rahmen von Breaking the Spell jeweils vier Künstler*innen ein, ein Buch auszuwählen und nacheinander zu annotieren. Dabei ergänzen und überschreiben sich vier Perspektiven zu einer kollektiven Spur. Samara Hersch, Giorgia Ohnessian Nardin, Swoosh Lieu und Antonia Sagh haben im Vorfeld von „Breaking the Spell“ in München gemeinsam das Buch Spells: 21st Century Occult Poetry, herausgegeben von Rebecca Tamás und Sarah Shin, ausgewählt und jeweils mit persönlichen Notizen, Stickereien und anderen Zusätzen versehen. Das Buch reiste seit April 2022 von Paris nach Irland, von Irland nach Italien, von Italien in die Türkei – trägt die Spuren seiner Leser*innen und seiner Reisen – und kommt nun nach München. Vom 14. – 17. Juli wird das Buch mit den originalen Annotationen der Künstler*innen in einer kleinen Installation in der Therese-Giehse-Halle zugänglich gemacht und lädt in einer gemütlichen Umgebung zu neuen persönlichen Begegnungen ein: allein oder in einer kleinen Gruppe kann es durchgeblättert, (vor)gelesen und angesehen werden.

Die Installation ist täglich ab 19:30 Uhr zugänglich. Am Donnerstag, 17. Juli findet als Teil des Abendprogramms von Breaking the Spell ein Gespräch mit Ivana Müller und bisher an Notes beteiligten Künstler*innen über das Projekt und den Prozess statt (Moderation: Marta Keil, Olivia Ebert).
