Tobias Schwencke

As a composer, pianist and arranger, musician Tobias Schwencke is a virtuoso in a wide variety of musical fields. From classical music to hip-hop, so-called new music to techno, baroque madrigals to Persian chanting, he discovers connections and creates contexts. His work has taken him to theaters and opera houses in Germany (Berliner Ensemble, Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Gorki Theater, Kammerspiele München, Staatsoper München, Staatsoper Berlin and many others) and abroad (Madrid, Vienna, Uppsala/Sweden), for which he develops a wide variety of music-theater evenings, writes live film music and musically directs theater productions. For the Ensemble Resonanz in Hamburg, for example, he created the theater music “sampled identity” in collaboration with the Hip Hop Academy Hamburg or an arrangement of Schubert’s “Winterreise” for the actor Charly Hübner. In 2021, his live film music for “Carmen” (Lubitsch 1918) was premiered at the Berlin UFA Film Night. He has worked with directors such as Herbert Fritsch, Leander Haußmann, Anna Bergmann, Claus Peymann and Manfred Karge. World premieres of his own compositions have been realized by ensemble intercontemporain, ensemble modern, musikfabrik nrw and the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, among others.
