Carl Hegemann

Born in Paderborn, Germany in 1949, Carl Hegemann studied philosophy, sociology and literature from 1969 to 1978 in Frankfurt am Main where, after completing his doctorate, he taught philosophy and sociology for ten years. From 2004 to 2005, he was visiting professor at the HdK Karlsruhe; from 2006 to 2014, he was professor of dramaturgy at the HMT “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig. Since 1979, he has worked at numerous theatres and opera houses, including the Zimmertheater in Tübingen, the Burgtheater in Vienna, the Bayreuth Festival, theatres in Freiburg, Bochum, Cologne, Zurich and Hamburg, the Berlin and Hamburg state operas and the opera house in Manaus, Brazil. Following the death of Heiner Müller, he was co-artistic director of the Berliner Ensemble from 1996 to 1998. Between 1992 and 2017, he worked for a total of 15 years at the Volksbühne on Rosa Luxemburg Platz in Berlin under the directorship of Frank Castorf, including as chief dramaturge from 2015 to 2017. While there, he also developed formative working relationships with Christoph Schlingensief, René Pollesch, Herbert Fritsch and Bert Neumann. In addition, Carl Hegemann teaches at colleges of art including in Vienna and Berlin. He has most recently worked with Frank Castorf, Jette Steckel and Christoph Marthaler. In 2018, he founded the dramaturgical consulting agency “Everyday live”.
