Tuncay Acar talks to Natali Gbele and Jasmin Spengler about the work of the Know Your Rights Initiative e.V. The initiative, known as KYRI for short, is a legal and information center where non-citizens in Germany can find out about the legal system, especially police and security law. The association was founded in 2021 by seven students from LMU Munich. Since its foundation, KYRI has already made a name for itself in Munich and has been working with Bellevue di Monaco, Condrobs e.V., Horizont e.V. and the Munich Refugee Council for some time. Together, they are trying to make the German legal system accessible to everyone. After all, how can everyone be equal before the law if it is not equally accessible and understandable for everyone?

Natali Gbele is a Palestinian lawyer. Natali started getting involved in Munich as soon as she began her studies, heading up the training department of the Refugee Law Clinic Munich. Subsequently, she also took on the position of board member. During her time at the Refugee Law Clinic, she decided to found the Know Your Rights Initiative e.V. together with six other students. At the beginning of this year, Natali successfully completed her first state examination in law and will start her doctorate at the Chair of International Law at the Faculty of Law at LMU Munich in April. In the meantime, she is also working there as a research assistant.

Jasmin Spengler is a law student at the LMU Munich who worked as a consultant and head of the training department at the Refugee Law Clinic e.V. at the beginning of her studies. This is where she met Natali and first heard about Natali’s idea of founding her own legal association. So Jasmin joined Natali and has been one of the founding members of the association ever since. Most recently, she was on the board of KYRI and is currently head of the management department. Jasmin is currently preparing for her first state examination.
