Nightcore is pop music sped up by about a quarter and pitched higher: Pop x 125% = Nightcore. An art without craftsmanship, without an author, without a subject. An explicit attempt to be generic, to dispense with authorship and individuality and become the pure edit.

Emerging from the depths of the internet in the early years of the millennium, swept up by barely comprehensible viral dynamics, Nightcore anticipated our current relationship to media-structured reality: intense stimuli, speed, melodic simplicity, softness, repetitiveness and an effortless reception; the desire for a present that is more, that is more of itself.

Three actors and a video artist counter this with the decelerated truth of sweating bodies. They play with the slowness of the constantly repeated movement. They listen to the eternity of the digital echo of our voices. In a setting somewhere between a sauna and the atmosphere of a comfort club, they become archaeologists of the Nightcore phenomenon. Their excavation site: our hyper-technological present in which the media has long since co-constituted the fundamental parameters of our sensory perception. They cautiously set their limbs in motion as the room slowly darkens and white noise emanates from the CPU cooler.

With “The Shire”, Luis August Krawen used his residency at the Kammerspiele to work with installations; now in “Nightcore” he experiments with opening his practice as a video artist to those elements that define theatre: the stage and acting.

Video becomes space in the truest sense of the word, and the movements in it become movements at the interface between physical and virtual reality.

We would like to thank Voi Scooters for generously providing the scooters for rehearsals and performances.
