In a system that profits from the systematic exploitation of migrant people, it is important not to stop at anti-racist castles in the air, even in the theater. Let’s talk about stories that are not being told. And about why. Let’s think together about what we can do, what struggles we can join, and what anti-racism looks like backstage, onstage, and in front of the stage!

As a part of the International Weeks Against Racism

Program

Thursday 23.03.2023
16:00 - 18:00, rehearsal stage 3.
Workshop with Beritan Balci

(Anti)-Racism on the Street and in the Theater
Workshop leader: Beritan Balci (acting student)

We can only change our future if we understand our history. In the workshop we will look at selected right-wing terrorist attacks in Germany, with a closer look at Munich (Oktoberfest attack, OEZ, NSU). Afterwards we will look at how different authors have artistically processed these attacks and murders, and what it is like to tell these stories today. We’ll approach a critical look around diversity in theater. What changes do we still need? And how can we shape them collectively? The second part of the workshop is about concrete practice: how does racism change the liberal arts? How can we respond to it? We will ask ourselves: what struggles have been and are already being waged for theaters, how can we make them useful for our concerns? And finally: how far do we want to go? How (anti)-racist are we really?

7:00 pm (Approx. 1 hr), Habibi Kiosk.
“Confessions/Confessions”

by and with Marléne Douty, Martin Weigel and Komi Togbonou.

What might it mean to decolonize together through theater? In their rehearsal work, the three will develop texts on their own positioning in the relationship between Togo and Germany, Africa and Europe, deal with racism and experiences of racism, the different stages of German-Togolese history - Togo was a German colony in 1880-1914, then a French colony until 1960 - and their consequences until today. Beyond the European concept of a separation of past, present and future, they want to work with testimonies from then and now. In their joint musical and performative practice, they will create echo spaces for these voices, with their bodies and by means of sound installations.
